How to Get the Most Out of ChatGPT If You Learn Differently
If you live with learning difficulties—whether it’s ADHD, dyslexia, memory issues, or just a brain that works a little outside the “standard”—you’ve probably been told to “just focus more” or “try harder.” That advice doesn’t cut it.
What does help? Tools that meet your brain where it’s at. And that’s where ChatGPT can become a real game-changer—not in a sci-fi way, but in a real-life support kind of way.
Here’s how I use it (and how I’ve supported others to use it) to make learning less frustrating—and way more doable.
1. Use It to Break Things Down (When You’re Overwhelmed)
Trying to tackle big chunks of info when your brain’s already overloaded? Don’t.
Instead, ask ChatGPT:
“Can you break this into small steps or explain it like I’m in high school?”
Chunking info makes it easier to digest—and gives you somewhere to start.
2. Ask for Real-Life Examples
Some of us just don’t “get it” until we see it in action. You can ask:
“Give me a real-life example of this so I can picture it better.”
Whether you’re studying, writing something, or learning a new skill—it helps to anchor it in reality.
3. Reword Complex Stuff Into Plain Language
Struggle with academic language or instructions that make no sense?
“Reword this so it sounds clear and natural, like a conversation.”
It’s not cheating. It’s accessibility.
4. Turn It Into a Study Buddy (That Doesn’t Judge)
ChatGPT can quiz you, summarise notes, or help you practice explaining a concept.
“Quiz me on this in simple terms.”
“Let me practise talking this out like I would in class.”
And the best part? It won’t roll its eyes if you ask for the same thing twice.
5. Use It for Task Planning When You’re Mentally Stuck
If you’ve ever sat there thinking “I don’t even know where to start,” try this:
“Here’s my task. What’s the easiest way to start? Break it into a checklist.”
No shame. Just structure.
Learning differently doesn’t mean learning less. It just means you need tools that make sense for you. ChatGPT isn’t about replacing your brain—it’s about backing it up.
If you’re figuring out how to make study or life admin less chaotic and more manageable, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to pretend it’s easy.
