Signs You’re Not Lazy—You’re Just Wired Differently
I wish someone had told me this sooner.
That being “lazy” wasn’t the issue. That I wasn’t failing at life.
That I just had a brain that works differently—and that I wasn’t the only one.
So if you’ve been beating yourself up, here’s what I want to say:
It’s not laziness. It’s executive dysfunction. It’s trauma. It’s burnout. It’s overwhelm.
Here’s how to tell the difference:
You want to clean your room. You want to send that email. You want to show up.
But something inside freezes. Not because you don’t care—because you’re overwhelmed.
That’s not laziness. That’s shutdown.
Other people forget stuff and laugh it off. You forget something and spiral for hours.
The shame hits hard. You feel like a burden. Like you’re always messing up.
That’s not because you’re lazy. That’s internalised guilt—and it builds up fast.
Ever sat down to do the thing you wanted to do—and just… couldn’t?
That disconnect? It’s not lack of discipline. It’s a brain trying to filter 100 tabs at once and freezing from the pressure.
Even when you finally slow down, you feel like you don’t deserve it.
You think, I haven’t done enough to earn this break.
But here’s the truth: you don’t need to earn rest. You’re allowed to just be.
I used to think structure meant I was weak. That if I needed a planner, reminders, routines—it meant I was broken.
Now? I see structure as a gift. A way to protect my energy and get through the day without falling apart.
